Dear Pat,
I hope this letter finds you surviving the onslaught of mail about the Conference Your monthly updates are helpful and I always look forward to them.
The attached is a proposal that I would ask be forwarded to the Trustees Committee on the Conference, with a request that they send it to the Conference Report and Charter Committee for consideration.
Also attached is a copy of the letter which accompanied the proposal when I sent it to Michael Alexander for comment. Mike has not chosen to comment, but I think the letter provides additional background information which may be helpful to the committee.
Some may ask, "when will he quite sending in proposals?" If they do, Pat, you can assure them that this is the last of them. It is actually nothing more than my own feeble attempts to find some way in which we can find the unity which will be required as we approach the turn of the century. It is intended as a positive approach, but I won't be surprised if some see it in a negative light.
When questioned about the proposal, the questions are essentially the same. Everyone wants to know if this approach will address the growing lack of trust that is invading our service structure. While they express it in a variety of ways, this is what lies at the heart of their concern. Our members really want to trust the conference process and our service structure. The now need, however, a new focal point from which they can build this trust. It is my hope that this can serve in that capacity.
On another note, Richard Bush sent me a letter letting me know he had received your note that I wanted the background material for Report and Charter.. Thanks for asking Richard to do that. All of my committees are very much interested in the background material for their corresponding committees. While I know it is extra work, I would like to request the background for all the committees except, of course, Grapevine.
Our area has really come alive in the past year. It's really exciting to see everyone begin to feel as though this Fellowship is really theirs. Of course, being drunks, our first reaction to this is to attempt change. So, to some degree, regardless of how all our proposals go, I will have a firm basis from which to encourage support of the office and the service structure.
It will be extremely exciting for me to come home and report on this Conference. Virtually everyone here will have some point that is near and dear to them. So, while it may be irritating for some to hear about all our proposals—to me it indicates a newfound sense of belonging for our area.
May God be with you all until we meet at the Conference.
Yours in love & Service
