YOUR WILL: your thinking

Three spiritual wrongs resulting from the common manifestations of self = resentments (wrong judgements), fears (wrong believing), sex (wrong actions).

Let's make sure we understand what a resentment really is: it is re-feeling old hurts. We don't have to be red faced with veins popping out of our heads and shaking, just irritated, on edge. We have not truly forgiven what ever we are re-feeling, not forgotten but forgiven. Re always means to repeat so we are re-feeling old pain and hurt over and over again and kicking our own butts again and again.

Fears are those things that are blocking us from doing something useful and or productive or are causing us not to experience the peace of mind and serenity we all want. They are interfering with our lives.

Guilt, remorse and shame are pretty much self-explanatory. They take the so called fun we think we had out of something we did to feel good.

Twenty five instructions on resentments in the Big Book also apply to fear and sex inventories.

Before we go on let's look at the page in the handout before the inventory for resentments, we want to look at these "spiritual" wrongs and they are spiritual wrongs because they block us off from God."

Look at next page, Review of Resentments and fold the forth and fifth columns back so we only see three columns. Now let's compare our sheet to page 65 in the Big Book. They look very similar. In the top right hand side of your handout are instructions of how to fill this sheet, in the Big Book they are on pages 64-66. Column one is the same but the sheet is not filled out and the same with column two and three.

Lets look at the sheet in the handout showing a picture of Self. The basic God given instincts given us by God make up Self. These instincts are like a building that has electricity, plumbing, a solid foundation with walls and a roof. As long as everything is working OK there no problem but let there be a short in the wiring and a fire may start, a broken pipe and a flood, a cracked foundation or weak wall and collapse, a hole in the roof and ruined items inside. The same with our instincts, when they are in tack the way God intended, we have no problem; people or things do not hurt us or threaten us, and we don't hurt or threaten others. But let our instincts of Self be out of kilter, and watch out. We are going to be angry, have resentments, be fearful and end up hurting others to build ourselves up when one or more or our instincts are hurt or even just threatened. Even worse, they don't have to be really hurt or threatened, we just have to think they are.

Then because of our resentment, re-feeling an old hurt, a spiritual wrong, God will not reside in our hearts with that in it. Fear blocks Him out because He will be in a heart with fear, meaning we are not trusting Him, we have no room for the courage that God gives us. And with the hurt we have done to others to build ourselves up come feelings of guilt, remorse, shame and self pity, again blocking us off from the peace of having God in our hearts. So from the guilt, remorse, shame, resentments, anger, and fear we quite effectively block ourselves off from the Spirit of the Universe who keep us sober, happy, joyful, free and sober, so we drink to change the way we feel, we want to feel better, we trigger the allergy and we are off again.

Resentments happen when an instinct is hurt or threatened, fear when we think a instinct will be hurt or is threatened, guilt, remorse, shame from hurting others.

When we get these things on paper they look dumb and stupid and they usually disappear. Those that don't can be prayed away so we can be resentment free, fear free, and have no guilt, remorse and shame and since those things are absent, we feel good, serene, at peace with ourselves and the world, what a wonderful feeling.

However, guess what? Those things, resentments, fears and the guilt, remorse and shame have a tendency to come back and block us off from God. So for that reason we must get to the root of the problem, the source, the exact nature of our wrongs to hinder there return. So our book tells us to analyze our past on page 67 and ask ourselves some real hard, tough questions. Now we go to column 5 on our inventory sheet and see what part we played in the first column disregarding the other person, place or institution. We also will use this column for Steps 5, 6, and 7 and the first column for Steps 8 and 9.

A PARTIAL FEAR LIST

fears (wrong believing)

Fears are not all bad, after all they are God given. They are bad when they block us from doing something useful, productive or causes us not to experience peace of mind, serenity or they interfere with our lives.

Here is a interesting prayer:

Thank you God for the gift of fear. I confess my self-will used fear in a self-seeking manner. Your fear is for flight, fight, or freezing. My use of fear is for destruction, despondency and dependence. God, please show me where my fear is hidden. I will continue to be your agent, to be your employee, and to be Your child. Amen.

Here is a partial list of some fears to assist you in identifying your own:
