Financial statement: 2nd and 3rd printings of Twenty-Four Hours a Day
2nd and 3rd printings of
Twenty-Four Hours a Day
From David M. in Lawrence, Kansas (Oct. 2, 2013):
"I contacted Carolyn C. in Daytona Beach and she sent me [a number of Richmond Walker files] including a financial statement prepared and signed by Richmond Walker."
This sheet gives us information about the second and third Florida printings, but David comments that it does not tell us how many copies were run off in the first printing in 1948. Nor does it tell us whether there was a fourth printing in Florida before Hazelden up in Minnesota took over printing and distributing the book in 1954. So to the best of David's knowledge at this point, we are left with those two questions still hanging.
From Richmond Walker's papers in the Florida archives, we know that he took most of the profit -- $2,000 -- and sent it to the New York A.A. office, keeping only a small prudent reserve. It was a very small amount though, so since it looks like he had to pay out almost $4,000 to print each run of around four thousand copies, he must have been planning on advancing most of the money for the next Florida printing, if there was one, out of his own pocket.
